Presenting the Gospel
Week 8, Sunday July 26th

Theme for this Sunday: Peter Defends the Gospel

Passage for Sunday: Acts 4:1-31

This passage introduces the persecution of the first Christians - something Jesus warned the Apostles of back in his Sermon on the Mount )Matt 5:10-12). Although early Church was experiencing favour amongst the general population with large numbers attracted towards saving faith in Jesus, they were also experiencing hatred and attacks from the religious leaders. It’s interesting that the two groups who were usually in opposition to each other - Pharisees and Sadducees - are united in their opposition to the gospel.
The religious leaders are most concerned about the lack of proper credentials for teaching people about scripture and their obvious courageous and confident method which was incredibly dynamic and effective. Their authority and status was being challenged and so they drag the Apostles in front of the Sanhedrin to give an account. Peter’s Holy Spirit inspired response is both bold, direct, and very shrewd. The Apostles' return after defending the gospel lead to a powerful prayer session that saw a further release of power through the Holy Spirit.
  • What are the elements of Peter's argument in defence of the gospel?
  • What were the particular elements of the prayer meeting and the content of the prayer?
  • What do we learn about ministry and witness from this chapter?
